Shanling M2X Portable Music Player – Comprehensive Review

Shanling M2X Portable Music Player - Comprehensive Review

Shanling gave me an M2x portable music player to review. I put it through its paces. Could this be one of the best inexpensive mp3 and FLAC players (DAPs) out there?

  1. I totally agree with you about the balance cable. I went to an audioshop to test the Sony NW-ZX300 using a very easy to drive earphones to my surprise the single ended out put doesn't give enough power that I have to put the volume at 80% were in NW- A35 which is much cheaper can power the earphone at 50% volume. Then I tried the balance out put, it doesn't change the sound quality it just increase the power. I was about to buy the damn thing but I ended up sticking with my old NW-A35.

  2. Have you tried all these? FiiO M7, Shanling M2X, Cayin N3, Hidizs AP80, and Hiby R3. I'm deciding between these 5, and I'm looking for the most neutral and detailed with least amount of hissing. Power-wise, I don't care too much as I'm most likely sticking with IEMs.

  3. Just bought mine recently because of your review. However, im just wonderin’ why the album art doesnt show on the album list. Whenever i play some tracks, i do see the art though.

  4. What DAP would you recommend for Campfire Andromeda's? I don't mind if the DAP is a little warm, don't want the noise some can generate and don't want to go through a endless DAP's to find the right one. Right now I have a Radsone EarStudio ES100 which is serviceable & quiet, equally very far from ideal being a BT device

  5. Thanks for the great review. I also watched Fiio M9 review. Am wondering if choosing between M9 and M2X. wish one would prefer interns of sound quality and features? Many thanks

  6. How do you bring up the screen to name a new playlist? Mine just goes "playlist 1" and no keyboard screen comes up to name it???

  7. great overview. one thing i am trying to figure out – does airplay let you send audio to an airplay enabled speaker? or is the airplay meant for the m2x to receive audio?

  8. You are like most reviewers and leave the sound description till last. I wish all reviewers would describe the sound first. The rest is just not as important I feel, I can live with all the quirks, I can´t live with something that does not fit my sound tastes so I waste 80% of the time listening to waffle about specs and such when the most important thing is what the ruddy player sounds like! Please, sound style and quality first the rest after, would save a huge amount of time!

  9. Hey there,

    I bought a m2x. Happy with it.

But! On my screen it never shows the artist or genre…

    "Unkown" is the info shown…

I added the right info on the file's tags!

    – albumartist for artist info

    – genre for genre info…

Refreshed all, went back to fabricsettings to import all from fresh again…

    Still no succes…

    That's a bit disapointing to be honest….

Am i doing something wrong here??

  10. I m wondering if the cost of little production highend mp3player that finaly we paid very expensive compare to big production highends product is a good value ? We must to not only love music we have to get big bank account.
Look at : Cayin n3 its popular but its very bad engeniring. And however 150$.
We have to think what we need and what we make us happy.
We have to ask to industrials to fix the 10khz response frequence accident an ALL WORLDS HEADPHONES. All yours headphones get a destroy response at 10khz. All ! Except hd800s etc…
and then we could use our phones to listen music.
And end of hysterical run of high ends hifi product.

Edit : and for 200$ we win 5% of reproduction quality, sellers dont tell that’s to us. With in such a inferior mobility and ergonomic using.

  11. The ONLY question is: Does the volume knob work after 6 month??? We had 3 Shanlings and ALL of them have problems with the volume knob! This device is an expensive electronic junk! Save your money for something better!

  12. I owned this for less than 1 year and the battery bulged and broke the back glass. I could theoretically replace the battery, and keep using the DAP in it's leather case with no glass back. But to replace the battery, I'd have to reach the connector which lies on the other side of the PCB, beneath the screen, so I'd have to remove the screen as well, which I can't do without specialized tools such as a heat gun.

Too much fuss, so into the recycling bin it goes. Other issues: the potentiometer attached to the wheel started acting right after I bought it, to the point I was unable to control the volume with it. Also, the UI is unoptimized, everything is too small, the virtual keyboard is particularly atrocious. Suffice to say I'm never buying Shanling again.
