I think the reference for apples makes more sense if it was based on Isaac Newton's Discovering gravity because of an apple. Falling is caused by the gravity of the earth and the fear of falling is caused because of the awareness of a human knowing that they'll die because of how deadly it would do to them if they were to fall.
Minor correction, Asa does think that she is better of dying, which is obvious considering her actions in chapter 127. But it was revealed that she thought she wanted to die due to the falling devil's ability
